Our story

Our History

Owatonna Mutual Fire Insurance Company traces its roots back to 1881, when local farmers faced limited access to insurance protection. Rather than accept that challenge, they came together to form a cooperative of policyholders—supporting one another by sharing the costs of repairs and replacements during times of loss and natural disaster. From this spirit of cooperation, the Township Mutual was born, laying the foundation for what would become Owatonna Mutual.
Originally known as The Deerfield Mutual Fire Insurance Company and based in Deerfield Township, Steele County, the company later relocated to downtown Owatonna and adopted the name Owatonna Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

Today, building on more than a century of success, we remain strong and firmly committed to our founding principles, neighbors helping neighbors in times of need. Our policyholders continue to own the company and are invited to participate in our Annual Meetings, ensuring their voices remain central to our mission.

At Owatonna Mutual Fire Insurance Company, we are focused on thoughtful, sustainable growth while delivering a hometown, personalized experience that larger national insurers often cannot match. Our independent agents live and work in the Minnesota communities you know, operate practical local offices, and offer insurance solutions designed specifically for the families and small businesses of Southern Minnesota—just like yours.
